FemmeSkate: Creating an Inclusive Skate Community Through Responsive Web Design

FemmeSkate

Overview

FemmeSkate is designed to highlight and bring together Femme and LGBTQ skateboarders, a group marginalized in the skateboarding community. I conceptualized and built this accessible and responsive website from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JS. In coding and designing it, I used a user-centered approach to make sure that my website would be accessible and friendly to use, while still allowing my own personal style to show through.

Reflection

Creating this website was incredibly valuable to me in being able to work with my frontend coding skills in a project I felt deeply passionate about. One thing that I can see having come a long way from this project is that I was struggling between expressing my own style through the edgy, DIY feel of the font, and keeping it readable. Going forward, I would make the following changes:

  • Change font to increase readability
  • Round corners of all rectangular boxes to improve visual design
  • Conduct usability testing and user research to understand what features or pages might be missing to users
Thoughts & Thanks

Because this project was early on in my UX career, there are many practices I would follow today that I had not yet learned when I made this project. For example, I did not conduct user research by talking to other skaters. Nor did I make a lo-fi prototype, or even sketches before jumping into the coding aspect. While this website is very meaningful to me because I was so proud of it at the time, it definitely is not without its faults. Thank you for viewing :)
